Family owned, family loved.

The Hills-Ingyon family has a legacy that extends over a quarter of a century at Sid Valley, and maintain their esteemed position as the dedicated proprietors of the estate.

Their responsibilities go beyond simply overseeing the day-to-day; they have made the deliberate choice to keep Sid Valley independent, and in doing so, special for every guest.

When not caring for the property, you’ll find the family enjoying the neighbouring countryside or nattering away in one of Sidmouth’s famous cafes or pubs.

a brief history…

The Sid Valley Hotel, originally known as Bernard’s Farm, dates back to the 17th century. Nestled between Plyford Farm and Springfield House, the farm once spanned 180 acres along the main oxen track to Honiton.

The farmhouse, with its south-facing position, was surrounded by barns, cowsheds, stables, a milking parlour, a piggery, and a cider press. A notable brick archway led to the sheltered main courtyard, where barns opened to house the animals.

In the 1970s, the farm was reconfigured into a bed & breakfast by the Slade family, who initially retained a small portion of the land. Over the years, the property underwent several transformations, with each owner leaving their mark.

In December 1994 we took over The Sid Valley Hotel, which had undergone significant changes including the removal of some barns and alterations to the main house. We have since restored the property with sensitivity, converting the remaining barns into self-catering cottages such as ‘The Stables’ and ‘The Dairy,’ while maintaining their traditional uses.

Our renovations aim to blend new elements with the historic charm of the estate, including adding a thatched porch and extending the sun-lounge. More recently, we acquired additional land and have continued to enhance the property, preserving the tranquil atmosphere that drew us to the Sid Valley Hotel nearly 30 years ago.

“From the moment we saw the area we knew we wanted to stay. Sid Valley is truly our home, and deserves to be shared. It’s too beautiful to keep to ourselves.”
